LIC ARTS OPEN 2012 KICKS OFF THIS WEEKEND!

IT’S FINALLY HERE!

LIC ARTS OPEN 2012 KICKS OFF SATURDAY, MAY 12!

The LIC Arts Open is back for more. Putting Queens on the cultural map for a second year in a row, the festival takes over Long Island City from May 12-20, 2012 and brings with it the new and noteworthy. We’ve got the cultural fix you’ve been looking for…

Kicking off the festival’s art lineup is the LIC Arts Open Launch Party hosted by Reis Studios in celebration of their 10-year anniversary. The event features an opening reception for the 10” x 10” exhibition with artwork created by over 100 artists from LIC, all on 10” x 10” wooden boards. The Gotham Center Exhibition features everything from sculpture and painting to video/multi-media work. Also not to be missed are SculptureCenter’s Bill Bollinger Retrospective, Sculptor/Mosaicist Karen Kettering Dimit at LIC Arts Center Gallery, and the Salazar Artists at Diego Salazar Gallery, to name a few.

Rounding out this vibrant cultural landscape are installments at MoMA P.S. 1 (including a Kraftwerk Retrospective), photography and painting at The Industry, the “Reductive” Opening at Jeffrey Leder Gallery, work by the Freecycling Group at Jackson 1, and Chuck Baker’s photography and Stephen Woods’ multimedia work at The Store. And don’t forget to make your way over to Arris Lofts, LIC Market, and the incredible array of work presented at multiple Vernon Blvd Venues.

We could go on and on, but it’s easier to check our online brochure for a complete listing of installments. There you’ll find dates (some of these events run through August) as well as location information and artist details.

ALSO!

Remember to mark the FREE Block Party on May 19 in your calendar, and check out over two hundred Open Studios participating this year.

For the kids (or the kid in all of us), the Kid’s Art Contest May 12-19 gets the creative juices flowing, with an awards ceremony on May 19 led by Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer.

And then, there’s the music lineup.  There’s the LIC Jazz Alliance on May 17 for the jazz fans, four of New York’s most up-and-coming female singer-songwriters in an impressive lineup on May 17, not to mention music pioneers Pat Irwin and J. Walter Hawkes performing together for one night only on May 18See our brochure for a full lineup.

And, featuring 9 concerts and 12 world premieres, the Queens New Music Festival from May 10 – 13 features some of the quirkiest, coolest new ensembles complete with everything from multi-media performances to ancient Renaissance instruments.

And for the theatre-lovers:  we’ve got you covered.  Fresh from Secret Theatre’s highly-successful One Act Factor, the One Act Factor REDUX (a sample of the final one acts written by local playwrights) takes the stage on May 14.

And for improv fanatics (we know you’re out there), we’ve got a great lineup of troupes like Laughing Devil Comedy Club, Queen’s Secret Improv Club, and Face Off Unlimited serving up the hottest and hippest improv comedy.  Check our brochure for a full lineup.

If that’s not enough to get you interested, we’ve also got food, drink, vendors and TONS OF FREE events, activities, and performances.

SEE YOU IN LIC!

Open Call To All Vendors for Block Party Saturday May 19th

LIC Arts Open is hosting a Block Party Saturday May 19th from noon to 6pm. As part of our weeklong arts celebration this is the busiest, and I repeat, busiest day of the entire LIC Arts Open. We’re blocking off the entire block of 22nd St. from 43rd to 44th Aves. and throwing a huge party for Queens. As a vendor/artist that does business in the LIC area, we want you.

What you can expect:

  • 1500 – 2000 visitors
  • Hundreds of open artist’s studios up and down the block that overlooks
the block party   (last year over 300 artists participated)
  • Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer, who will be naming the winners
of the children’s art contest of more than 2,500 entries
  • Samurai sword fighting demonstration
  • Ecuadorian dance performance
  • Live music, bands, theatre and comedy and more, more, more
  • Media publicity galore. We’ll be featured in multiple press outlets including 4-page pullouts with maps in both the Queens Chronicle and the Queens Courier

Vendors/organizations: $50  Individual artists/artisans table: $25
And everyone can sign-up via the same “Vendor sign-up link” below.

Vendors/Organizations: I have just gotten off the phone with the mayor’s office and I was told that since we’re a one-day block party the only permit necessary is the one you already have that allows you to do business, we’ll need a copy. No sponsor letter or other mayoral permission is necessary. If you use propane you may need a G23 permit.

Artists: For your table, just sign-up. No complications. No hassles.

Let’s get the ball rolling. If you’re interested, email me back: peter@licartsopen.org
and send me your contact info (confirm contact person, email and phone).

Open Call To Vendors

The LIC Arts Open Block Party is coming Saturday, May 19th and hundreds of artists will be opening their doors to the public on the busiest day of this nine day celebration of the arts in LIC. There will be food, music (that’s live music), dance, theatre, contests, prizes. This is the largest festival of the arts in all of Queens and you can be a part of it! Display your wares. Sell your stuff. It’s a big day with lots of hungry people. Hungry for art. Hungry to be entertained. Hungry to shop. And just plain hungry.

And did I mention prizes? Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer will be on hand to present the Children’s Art Award. Thousands of children from around the city have submitted their artistic impression of “Green Queens” and the Councilman will crown the lucky winners. Thousands of entries. Thousands of kids and parents attending and available to see your table, booth or food truck.

This is a big deal and a tremendous opportunity.  Vendors, it’s only $50. Individual artists, artisans and others…$25. C’mon. You cannot afford to pass up this much exposure and this price!

It’s all happening on 22nd Street (right down the block from Silvercup Studios and in the midst of all the Open Studios) between 43rd and 44th Aves. with easy access via the N, Q, 7, E, M and G trains. Get on board and join in the fun.  Get your spot today.
